The software gives you the tools. You're still responsible for meeting the IRS requirements that apply to you as a preparer.
- You need your own PTIN from the IRS to prepare federal tax returns for pay.
- To e-file your clients' returns, you need your own IRS e-file authorization (EFIN).
- Buying the software does not give you a PTIN, an EFIN, or ERO status. Those come from the IRS through its own application process.
- Some states have additional requirements for tax preparers.
